Puss in Boots
Once upon a time, in a small village surrounded by meadows and rivers, there lived an old miller with his three sons.
Though they were not rich, they felt fortunate to have one another and enjoyed days full of laughter and starry nights.
But one day, the old miller told them that he would soon set out on a journey from which he could not return. He left them everything he had as their inheritance: a mill, a donkey, and a cat.
After his death, the brothers gathered to divide the inheritance. The eldest son received the mill, the second kept the donkey, and the youngest, named Lucas, was left with the cat.
Lucas felt sad and confused, for it seemed he had received the least useful share.
“My brothers will be able to make a living working together, but what will I do with a cat?”
lamented Lucas as he looked at the feline, whose fur was soft and shining and whose eyes seemed to hide a secret.
The cat, who had been listening from his corner, stepped toward Lucas with an elegant gait and said:
“Do not worry, Lucas. Just give me a pair of boots and a sack, and you shall see how I can help you.”
Lucas, surprised to hear the cat speak, hesitated at first. Even so, he finally agreed to what he asked.
“All right, I will give you what you ask for, but I hope you can truly help me.”
replied Lucas, still doubtful, yet hopeful.
Once the cat had his boots and sack, he transformed. He looked like a very peculiar little gentleman.
With the boots on, his stride was purposeful and his gaze steady. Lucas watched in amazement as the cat seemed to have a plan.
The cat said to Lucas:
“Now, watch what I can do.”
And so, with sack in hand and boots snugly fastened, the cat made his way to the field. It was a sunny day, and the birds were singing while the cat, with great stealth and elegance, prepared his trap.
He placed a little wheat and some fresh herbs inside the sack and lay down to wait, pretending to be asleep.
It was not long before a curious little rabbit, drawn by the smell of the wheat, came near. With a movement as quick as lightning, the cat snapped the sack shut, trapping the rabbit inside.
Proud of his catch, the cat returned home with the rabbit and said to Lucas:
“You see? I told you I could help you. This is only the beginning.”
Lucas, with a smile that was beginning to believe in the possibilities his clever new friend offered him, felt hope growing in his heart. Perhaps, after all, inheriting a cat was not such a bad thing.
And so, with the cat by his side, Lucas began to imagine a future full of adventures and new opportunities.
One morning, while the sun was still stretching awake behind the mountains, the cat said to Lucas:
“Today we are going to visit the king. But first, I need you to call yourself ‘The Marquis of Carabas’ when we stand before his subjects.”
“The Marquis of Carabas?”
Lucas repeated, incredulous, though amused by his cat’s idea.
“Yes, trust me. And remember, just play along,”
replied the cat with a mischievous smile.
The cat set off toward the royal fields, where he knew the king and his court enjoyed their morning walks.
With cunning, the cat caught not only a rabbit but also two plump partridges, using tricks and wiles known only to him.
Filled with pride, he presented himself at the palace. With an elegant bow, he addressed the palace guard:
“Good sir, please announce the arrival of the Marquis of Carabas, who brings gifts for His Majesty.”
The guard, impressed by the cat’s presence, nodded and led him before the king.
With a firm step and a shrewd look, the cat approached the king, his sack overflowing with game. He bowed deeply and, in a voice full of solemnity yet without losing his spark, exclaimed:
“Your Majesty, I have brought these humble gifts on behalf of my noble master, the Marquis of Carabas. His loyalty to your crown is as strong as a knight’s devotion to his sword.”
The king, astonished and pleased by such a display of respect, accepted the gifts and asked after the marquis. The cat, quick in his wit, replied:
“My noble master will soon have the honor of presenting himself before Your Majesty. At present, he is occupied with matters of great importance to the kingdom.”
For weeks, the cat continued visiting the palace, each time with more impressive gifts.
His fame grew both at court and throughout the kingdom, and everyone was eager to meet the mysterious Marquis of Carabas.
At last, the cat said to Lucas:
“The time has come to reveal your true identity. Tomorrow, the king and his court will walk by the river. It is the perfect day for you to bathe there, and I shall take care of the rest.”
Though nervous, Lucas trusted his friend and nodded. The next day, while he was dipping into the river waters, the king drew near.
Suddenly, the cat raised his voice with genuine alarm:
“Help! Help! The Marquis of Carabas is drowning!”
His cries echoed along the riverbanks like the desperate call of a faithful servant. The guards, alerted by the urgency in his voice, leapt into the water without hesitation.
As Lucas was dragged out of the river, soaked but safe, the king watched him with eyes full of concern and respect.
“Thanks to your brave cat, Marquis, you are safe. Come, join us on our ride,”
invited the king, impressed by the cat’s bravery and the nobility of his master.
As he rode beside the king, Lucas, now the Marquis of Carabas, felt a whirlwind of emotions.
Only days before, he had been a young man with no future, and now the possibility of a full and happy life was unfolding before him.
Each word of his faithful cat echoed in his mind: “Trust me.” And for the first time in a long while, Lucas not only trusted his feline friend, but also himself.
After the rescue in the river, the fame of the Marquis of Carabas and his brave cat spread throughout the kingdom.
Lucas, who had once doubted his fortune when he inherited only a cat, now rode beside the king and his court like a true nobleman.
But the cat still had an ace up his sleeve, a plan that would secure Lucas’s fortune forever.
One day, the cat learned that the king and his daughter, the beautiful princess, would ride near a grand castle belonging to a fearsome ogre. The cat smiled cunningly and said to Lucas:
“Today your fortune will change forever. Trust me and follow my plan.”
Lucas nodded; his trust in the cat was unshakable.
Meanwhile, the cat went ahead to the castle to prepare the ground. On arriving, he requested an audience with the ogre, who was known for his ability to transform himself into any creature.
“Lord Ogre, I have heard of your incredible powers, and I could not pass by without witnessing such a marvelous ability,”
said the cat with a bow.
The ogre, with a smile full of smugness, bent toward the cat.
“You doubt my powers?”
he roared, his voice rumbling through the castle walls.
“Watch and learn!”
In a flash, his body began to change. He grew, his skin became covered with a golden mane, and a deep roar rose from his throat.
In the blink of an eye, the ogre had transformed into a mighty lion. The cat, eyes opened wide, backed up to a beam, feigning a fear that in truth only concealed his cunning.
“Impressive!”
he exclaimed, flicking his tail with care,
“but I do not believe you can become something as small as a mouse.”
The ogre’s arrogance was his greatest weakness, and the cat knew it.
Driven by the challenge, the ogre transformed himself into a mouse. Without losing a second, the cat pounced on him and devoured him, ending the ogre’s threat once and for all.
Meanwhile, the king and his retinue were drawing near the castle. When he saw the royal carriage arriving, the cat ran to meet the king, exclaiming:
“Welcome, Your Majesty, to the lands of the Marquis of Carabas!”
The king, impressed and curious, entered the castle, admiring its rich lands and splendid halls.
Lucas, dressed in fine clothes provided by the cat, carried himself with the elegance of a true nobleman.
“Marquis, I never imagined you possessed such wealth and such a magnificent castle.”
said the king with a look of approval.
At that moment, the princess, captivated not only by the wealth but also by Lucas’s charm, whispered to her father:
“Father, the Marquis of Carabas is a man of great worth. I believe I have found my true love.”
The king, seeing the radiant look in his daughter’s eyes and recognizing in Lucas a young man of great merit, smiled with satisfaction.
“Marquis,”
he said, in a voice filled with kindly authority,
“it would be an honor to welcome a man of your caliber into our family. Would you accept my daughter’s hand in marriage and share this kingdom with us?”
Lucas, astonished by the greatness of the offer, felt his heart beating hard. In his mind, he repeated the days when he had doubted his future, and now destiny was offering him more than he had ever dreamed.
With a deep bow, he took the princess’s hand.
“It will be an honor, Your Majesty.”
The wedding was celebrated with great splendor and joy, and everyone in the kingdom rejoiced in the union.
Lucas and his cat, now a respected lord, lived happily, and the cat hunted mice only for sport, always remembering how a simple pair of boots had changed his destiny and that of his master forever.
And that is all… for the moment.
Til the next tale.
